Ohio and Kentucky Motorcycle Laws
When you’re injured in an accident, understanding your rights as a motorcyclist is essential to building a strong case. In Ohio, all motorcycle operators and passengers under 18 are required to wear helmets that meet federal safety standards, and all motorcyclists and riders are required to wear protective eyewear. Ohio law also requires motorcycles to have working headlights, tail lights, and brake lights at all times, even during daylight hours, to increase visibility.
Motorcyclists have the same rights to the road as any other vehicle operator, and drivers must treat them accordingly. Lane splitting (riding between lanes of traffic) is illegal in Ohio, which can sometimes become a point of dispute in accident cases.
Kentucky's laws are similar, but with one key difference: the state requires helmets for riders under 21 years old, as well as those with instructional or intermediate licenses. Like Ohio, Kentucky mandates that motorcycles operate with the required amount of lights. Motorcyclists are entitled to full use of a traffic lane and cannot be forced to share it with other vehicles. Lane splitting is also prohibited in Kentucky.
